Hollie Cook is a reggae, “tropical pop” singer/songwriter from London, who has led a successful international career for more than 10 years. We met with Hollie and her team to create a sustainability plan and green rider for her album release tour - Happy Hour in 2022. The aim was to reduce food and plastic waste from her hospitality rider but also understand her travel impact.
During her October tour we managed her sustainable merchandise and used this time to engage with her audience on her sustainable initiatives. We audited 14 venues to assess the reception and compliance of the green rider and what sustainable initiatives they had in place. After the tour we wrote a comprehensive report for her and her team to improve their wellbeing and green standards.
AMIGAS is an inclusive, female-run business that aims to unite and collaborate with women from across the music and events industries. We worked with their director, Laura, to create an inclusive & sustainable policy for her company alongside a 5 key initiative plan. They have guidelines for the artists they promote and have been engaging with their audience on sustainability. Amigas was also one of the first promoters to partner with EarthPercent!
Bristol MC and host extraordinaire, Gardna, has been a staple part of the UK scene for the last few years and has steadily built up a solid reputation for bringing the good vibes, among both his fans and his musical peers. Last year, we created green & inclusive rider Gardna to tour with during his festival season. The aim was to reduce waste and start engaging with the promoters he worked with. We are proud to say that Gardna received a Green Artist Award from Noztock festival for the work we did together.
We have been teaching the Event Sustainability module for 3rd year BA Events Management students at Bimm Bristol since September 2020. We have build a curriculum that focuses on environmental, social and economic sustainability. Engaging on topics such as climate & social justice, intersectionality, equitable line-up, alongside circularity, audience behaviour and impact reduction.
We have also been teaching the Touring & Live events module at Level 5. This module is for entry-level into the music industry and helps the students identify the different roles, types of events and components of Touring & Live events. We built a curriculum that adds a sustainability twist to each topic in order for students to start engaging with the future of the music industry.
In 2021, we delivered two sustainability sessions at USW Music & Drama for the Immersed Festival module. The aim was for students to embed sustainability principles into their festival while developing new skills for future employment.
Since then the Festival has made Music Declares Emergency their main partner, amplifying the No Music on a Dead Planet messaging across Cardiff by creating the first NMDP mural in a non-English language. This year, the stages were named after one of the 4 elements, making environmental sustainability a key theme of their immersive artistic identity.
